9.30 am All Age Worship with Crèche and Sunday Club
This is a lively, informal service in which the music is led by our music group, and in which everything that happens can be enjoyed by folk of all ages, whether regular churchgoers or not. It lasts for just one hour, finishing promptly at 10.30 am; though there are refreshments afterwards for those who wish to stay for them.
Children and toddlers are in the main part of the service only for the first quarter of an hour, then go to the back of church or Creche for their own activities.
Sometimes, at the contemporary services, there are baptisms or thanksgivings for the birth of a child, and from time to time the uniformed organisations join us for their 'Church Parade'.
11.00 am Traditional Worship
On all Sundays except the third in each month, the traditional service is a celebration of Holy Communion ordered in conformity with the Church of England's "Common Worship". On the third Sunday, it is a service of Songs of Praise.
At the traditional services, the hymns that have inspired worshippers through the ages are led by the Choir and sung to the accompaniment of the organ. About once every two months, the Laying on of Hands for wholeness and healing is offered in the course of a Communion Service for those who wish to avail themselves of it.
The 11.00 am services are preceded by refreshments from 10.30 am onwards for those who wish to come earlier than they need in order to enjoy meeting those who have attended the 9.30 am contemporary service.
Please note that there are no creche facilities or children's activities during the traditional services.
6.30 pm A Time of Worship
On all Sunday's except the third in each month, the evening service is a very informal Service of the Word, held in the Church Lounge. Hymns and songs are interspersed with prayer, teaching, and silence.
On the third Sunday in each month, a traditional service of Holy Communion is held in the church itself, with traditional hymns being led by the choir and sung to the accompaniment of the organ.
When, as happens from time to time, there is a united service elsewhere in the deanery or diocese, no evening service is held at St James.
Wednesdays
9.30 am Holy Communion
This is a celebration of Holy Communion ordered in conformity with the Church of England's "Common Worship". The service includes prayers, scripture readings, and a short address.
10.30 am Toddler Praise
This is a service held every Wednesday during term-time for those with pre-school children and babies. The service has a regular, simple and repetitive format of songs, stories, prayers and games.
"This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about - not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they've done to our relationship with God. My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other." 1 John 4.9-10.
